We were so excited to have Dr. Jeff Parker from Southside Baptist Church visit our RIF book distribution. On March 6, 2010, Southside Baptist Church and Pinelake Baptist Church will send over 80 volunteers for a fun day to plant trees and work in the school gardens. Be reading for more info about that event!!!

March RIF/ Students Celebrate Black History Month

Van Winkle students participated in RIF (Reading is Fundamental) today. Students enjoyed selecting a book of their choice and claiming it as their own. Van Winkle is so very fortunate to have The Junior League of Jackson to sponsor RIF by contributing 25% of the money needed to provide the books to all children, three to four times a year. THANKS, JR. LEAGUE!!! Mrs. Land encouraged the students to write Thank You notes that will be given to The Junior League volunteers in April, when the students have their last RIF distribution. We were very excited to have two members of the Junior League join us for the distribution.

So BLESSED by our School DADS!!!

WOW!! On arrival at Van Winkle on Monday morning, we were greeted with news media from local television and this time the NEWS was good. Van Winkle dads, granddads, uncles, and others have volunteered to be a presence in the school doing a variety of tasks like listening to students read, greeting students in the cafeteria, and being in the halls. Students and staff have enjoyed the presence of these dads in our schools. Thanks goes to Mr. Mullen for planning the activities of this week.

New Stage Theater / Production Crew

Students in the Fourth Grade have enjoyed a month of learning about being in the theater and all of the careers associated with the theater. This has all been made possible through the Ford Foundation and through Ask4More Arts. The students will enjoy presenting a program for the school and community on Friday night. The program will feature two skits based on the books, Talk about a Family and Uncle Jed's Barbershop. The students and staff look forward to having guests such as Parents for Public Schools, New Stage Theater Actors, and others. A special thanks goes out to all who have made this grant possible.

A Fun Day in the Land of Learning

Dear Students,Parents, and others who enjoy our School Blog,
Today was very special for me and the day happened ALL because of you!!! Today I received a "Teacher Recognition" award from "The Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership" along with 11 other teachers in Metro Jackson. The meal was wonderful and it was great having Dr. Bowen, Mr. Mullen, Pat White, and my sweet husband with me for this event. It was even more wonderful to look into the booklet and find that my church and my husband and boys had put beautiful ads in for me.(I will enclose a picture of these later.) I am so humbled by this award and I will never forget how great it made me feel.
I want all of you precious students, staff, and parents to know that this was an award that could only happen because of you. I am so very proud to teach in such a wonderful school with the support and talents that you students bring to the classroom each day. I think about you 24 hours of each day.....praying that I am meeting all of your needs. THANK YOU!!! I am so proud of you!!! I cannot wait to follow you throughout your futures to see where life is going to take you.
I share my "teaching award" with you because you are the ones that inspire me to \ come to school each day!!! I am so BLESSED to have students like you. I am so blessed to have the support of a wonderful staff. I am so blessed to have the support of my students' parents and of the stakeholders in this school system. THANK YOU!!!

Mrs. Land at SCHOOL on a SNOW DAY!!!

WOW!! WHAT a beautiful day in the snow!! Mrs. Land had to get out to mail a very important birthday package to her grandson, REED. SHE convinced Mr. Land to go by Van Winkle so she could take pictures of Van Winkle in the snow. She also took a few seconds to place a little snowman on top of the Van Winkle sign. Everything was beautiful, but Mrs. Land realized really fast, that what makes Van Winkle such a special school are the people who go there....the precious students, the staff, the parents, and the involved stakeholders. It was a Great DAY!!!
