Wow, it is hard to believe that S.H.O.P. is finally here. All classes in Open Doors have been very busy working on projects for S.H.O.P. (Students Helping Others Planetwide). Our project this year is facilitating a can food drive for the Genesis Food Bank. Students and Staff at the school have been very busy making sure that we represent our school well in this project. Students in the fourth and fifth grade heard two speakers talk about the importance of this project. Dr. David Gatlin and Reverand Steve Casteel spoke to the students about the statistics of those needing food in Jackson, MS and how every can of food is important to those in need. Reverand Casteel told about living for 36 hours as a homeless person in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania so that he could experience a little of what that kind of life was like. The students were engrossed with both speakers and were motivated to do even more to promote the collection of cans of food.
Students in Open Doors have created necklaces, paper mache' bracelets, and flying streamers to demonstrate their theme of "Making the World Brighter for Those With Needs". They look forward to selling these items at S.H.O.P.
Look for many pictures to be uploaded about this event.
